Our Journey

Our journey began in 2017, when we decided to rent a piece of land in Kyarki village, in the Tehri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand. That’s where we first cultivated chia seeds (Salvia hispanica L.), a crop that was never grown before in the Uttarakhand mountains. With time, we discovered that this crop had many useful characteristics, not only for those who eat it, but also for those who grow it. In the Uttarakhand hills, there are many problems with agriculture, including a lack of irrigation facilities, the small size of the landholdings, and wild animals eating or destroying the crops. Chia can be cultivated in rain-fed conditions, it has a high value, and is not attacked by wild animals. We conducted three years of agronomic experiments under the supervision of the University of Udine, Italy, and finally gained our confidence that this crop could really work out for the small-scale Himalayan farmers! The results of our experiments, a successful first commercial cultivation in 2021, together with an honest business model, were the key to our success. More and more farmers are interested in adopting chia farming because it is easy to grow, it brings in a good amount of money, and we buy it at their doorstep, paying them directly at harvest. Our start-up journey culminated in 2022 by winning a Central Government grant under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana scheme launched by the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare.
